{"id":31,"date":"2010-08-15T19:03:46","date_gmt":"2010-08-15T19:03:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/demo.studiopress.com\/genesis"},"modified":"2020-02-07T16:09:09","modified_gmt":"2020-02-07T16:09:09","slug":"sample","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.mylesdownes.com\/?page_id=31","title":{"rendered":"Philosophy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-944\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mylesdownes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Lands-End-Labyrinth-1024x732.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"512\" height=\"366\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mylesdownes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Lands-End-Labyrinth-1024x732.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.mylesdownes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Lands-End-Labyrinth-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.mylesdownes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Lands-End-Labyrinth-768x549.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.mylesdownes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Lands-End-Labyrinth-1536x1098.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.mylesdownes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Lands-End-Labyrinth-2048x1463.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/>I believe very strongly that what each of us really wants is to feel\u00a0whole, alive and to be living a deeply fulfilled existence, and I\u00a0always feel honored to be a part of what brings another to that\u00a0place within themselves. \u00a0 I consider therapy to be a deeply\u00a0resonant way to co-create those ways of being that we wish to see\u00a0in ourselves and in the world, and as such always consider myself\u00a0to be more of an engaged collaborator and less of distant expert,\u00a0providing support and offering guidance as you find what it is that\u00a0you\u00a0want.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, I draw\u00a0upon over 20 years of\u00a0experience and training to\u00a0provide you with tools and\u00a0ideas for new ways of being\u00a0that you might not be able\u00a0to find on your own. Often\u00a0we get lost in our journey\u00a0towards a healthier self, go\u00a0down a wrong path if you\u00a0will, and\u00a0<strong>get stuck<\/strong>\u00a0in ways\u00a0of dealing with things that\u00a0may have worked once, but\u00a0no longer continue to do so.\u00a0We may have experienced\u00a0<strong>trauma<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>abuse<\/strong>, or parents\u00a0who were unable to give us\u00a0what we needed. \u00a0 We may\u00a0have had outwardly\u00a0&#8220;normal&#8221; experiences that\u00a0still left us feeling out of\u00a0sorts,\u00a0<strong>depressed<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>anxious<\/strong>,\u00a0or unable to have satisfying\u00a0relationships. \u00a0 Whatever\u00a0the reason for the possible\u00a0missteps we may have\u00a0taken, it is my task to assist\u00a0you in locating these\u00a0outdated ways of dealing\u00a0with the vagaries of life,\u00a0and to help you discover\u00a0more authentic and\u00a0potentially fulfilling\u00a0alternatives.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Essential Approach\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nI believe strongly that\u00a0everything is interrelated,\u00a0and as such approach the\u00a0practice of psychotherapy\u00a0from a highly\u00a0<strong>holistic<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>experiential<\/strong>\u00a0viewpoint.\u00a0 \u00a0Research in the field\u00a0increasingly shows that the\u00a0most effective techniques\u00a0for lasting change are those\u00a0that integrate body, mind\u00a0and spirit, as well as those\u00a0which operate more from\u00a0an approach that operates in\u00a0the moment and utilizes\u00a0clients&#8217; actual experiences.\u00a0 \u00a0If we picked up our\u00a0difficulties through our\u00a0experiences, does it not\u00a0make sense to work on\u00a0them through the same\u00a0access point? \u00a0 As such, I\u00a0am most attracted to\u00a0techniques such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hakomi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hakomi<\/a>\u00a0(a\u00a0<strong>mindfulness-based,\u00a0experiential modality<\/strong>) that\u00a0allow for the nurturing of\u00a0those experiences in a safe,\u00a0supportive environment.<\/p>\n<p>Recent research has\u00a0repeatedly shown that it is\u00a0often the relationship\u00a0between therapist and client\u00a0that in the end is the most\u00a0powerful factor in healing.\u00a0 \u00a0Neuropsychology advances\u00a0are changing the way that\u00a0we think about how therapy\u00a0works, and one of the most\u00a0profound examples of that\u00a0is what we now know about\u00a0how relationships are\u00a0formed and maintained in\u00a0the brain. \u00a0 The limbic part\u00a0of our brain is the part that&#8217;s\u00a0based on relationship; only\u00a0those species that spend\u00a0time nurturing and raising\u00a0young have developed\u00a0limbic brains, because they\u00a0need relationships in order\u00a0to survive. \u00a0 In terms of\u00a0how this affects therapy,\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mylesdownes.com\/links.htm#generaltheory\">A\u00a0General Theory of Love<\/a><\/em>\u00a0puts it perhaps most\u00a0succinctly: &#8220;When a limbic\u00a0connection has established\u00a0a neural pattern, it takes a\u00a0limbic connection to revise\u00a0it.&#8221; \u00a0 As such, in order to\u00a0change our relationships\u00a0(both with ourselves and\u00a0with others), we have to do\u00a0so from within one.<\/p>\n<p>As a background to these\u00a0fundamental approaches, I\u00a0bring to the table my\u00a0education and interests in\u00a0the fields of\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Integral_theory_(Ken_Wilber)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">integral\u00a0psychology<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/mindfulness\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">mindfulness-based practices<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Complexity_theory\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">complexity theory<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Living_systems\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">living\u00a0systems theories<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gender_variance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>gender<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.definition-of.com\/sexual+variance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>sexual variance<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Intentional_community\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">intentional communities<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnvc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">nonviolence<\/a>, earth-based\u00a0and other spiritual\u00a0practices, dance (&amp;
